On the left is a work by Wassily Kandinsky. The movement in this piece inspired a student to create her final image entitled "Explosion."

On the left is a work by Piet Mondrian. During a short exercise on parallel and perpendicular lines, students created the image on the right, using colors and shapes instead of solid blocks of color to explore a grid of parellel and perpendicular lines.

On the left is a wall installation by Sol Lewitt. The shapes emerge from the composition through the rotation of closely placed parallel lines. Building on this idea, one studentused contrasting colors to bring out the fan-line shapes in his composition.

On the left is a quilt design. One student was inspired by the repeating pattern of the quilt to create her final composition.
